2017-18 Leafs Year in Review: Matt Martin

Matt Martin quickly went from “irreplaceable in the mind of his head coach” to afterthought this season, and the Leafs likely became the better because of it. Overtaken by players such as Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson, the Leafs’ closest prototype to an enforcer was one of the league’s healthiest players this season, as he was a healthy scratch for over 30 games.

His last game of the season against a team that wasn’t Buffalo came in January, as he suited up for the Leafs against Colorado on the 22nd.

Honestly? The joint-best points per game mark of his career in a season where he played more than 5 games, respectable enough possession stats, and three goals? Wasn’t a bad year, per se.

Grade: C+

Even though the year was somewhat of a career year for Martin, he didn’t really move the needle that much. Did about as expected in a fourth line role, and we’re not going to say it was anything worth writing home about. But he did his job well enough before being pulled from the lineup, so hey, take that C+ to the bank.

Production snapshot

What Ziggy said. Some decent rate stats, but it’s not like we had a ton to go on. He looked decent this year, but it’s hard to imagine he’ll reinvent himself at this point in his career.

Season highlight

I’m not sure if Matt Martin has scored a highlight reel goal since junior, so we settled with this goal against Edmonton. Any goal from Matt Martin is always a fun one, so there you are.

2018-19 Outlook

Will Matt Martin still even be a member of the Maple Leafs come October? He found his way out of the lineup for about half the season, so it’s hard to say that he really slots into the opening day roster. As part of his contract comes via signing bonus, he is owed just $2.5 million over the final year of his contract. Don’t be too surprised if the Leafs try to ship him out of town, but other than straight up for Oscar Klefbom or Erik Karlsson, we won’t speculate on what that package may entail.
