Jack Edwards Needs to STFU

I guess we’ve got to talk about Jack Edwards. No we really shouldn’t, it should be established that this guy is gross, but with the Leafs not playing until Thursday we probably owe you some content that isn’t just us begging for Komarov to stay out of the lineup.

Here’s what Jack Edwards had to say about Andreas Johnsson getting injured on what also a non-call on Marchand:

Anyway, let’s unpack this.
  1. That was interference by Marchand. It wasn’t called. You had to deal with a stoppage of play instead of having a penalty called. Maybe you should STFU, you worthless homer.
  2. Stopping the play when a guy is hurt generally seems like a #good #idea. Does it have the potential to be abused? (possibly). Does it mean that injuries get treated sooner and we’re not relying on the refs to diagnose the seriousness? (probably).
  3. Why the hell are you looking for bone, you crazed bastard?
  4. Am I the only one curious about what Jack Edwards standards are for Pee Wee games. Presumably they can still be conscious and have their bones still inside their body, but to be safe you should probably skate to the bench if you have a concussion because you don’t want to interrupt the flow of the game.
  5. Context apparently matters. If you want immediate medical treatment please get hurt in a regular season game with a high goal differential.
  6.  Finally, this is Jack Edwards…

Jack Edwards is a 61 year old man who look like he weighs 100 pounds soaking wet. I question how much blood someone should be calling for when they look they’d break into a thousand pieces if they slipped on the sidewalk. Does it make it right if someone bigger or “has played the game” makes the same comments? No. Though coming from Edwards the comments seem especially rich when he seems completely disconnected from the physicality of the sport he covers.

It really isn’t worth giving a whole lot of time to a guy who has his own Awful Announcing tag, but it’s hard to find a more grating personality in hockey. Let’s take a look at some of his greatest hits…

Jack Edwards compares Matt Cooke to Sirhan Sirhan

Jack Edwards yells “GET UP” at Roman Hamrlik

Jack Edwards compares the Bruins to American Revolutionaries after an empty net goal

So yeah, this guy is the worst. He’s always been the worst, and his schtick will continue to play in Boston because their fans are the worst. There aren’t many people who make me happy for Jim Hughson calling the game, but Jack Edwards is definitely one of them.

Yeah, well, Rogers and TSN got rid of the Leafcentric broadcast crews led by Joe Bowen, in favour of a “neutral” crew which would praise the league for suspending Kadri while everyone knows Wingels was faking, on the LNN Bowen & Co were rolling their eyes at it, but they don’t get on for the main broadcasts. Used to have our own guy calling our games for our team, and it never bothered me, and apparently the Americans are not interested in “neutrality” neither, they back their teams to the hilt, it’s just too bad Canadians are always so eager to make themselves doormats when nobody else in the world does, but to cry about it after? Hey, too bad, so sad, you make yourself a doormat you’re a doormat, you got what you wanted.

What part don’t you understand? The Bruins channel is all in for the Bruins, why would Leafs Geeks shout “STFU Jack Edwards, you’re gross!” in the name of some fake “neutrality” which doesn’t exist for the Americans, we threw our Leafs crew under the bus in favour of a “neutral non homer” crew, and now Leafs Geeks is getting bent out of shape about it? The Bruins channel is not neutral, they’re all in for the Bruins, there’s nothing wrong with that, let us have our Leafs crew who is all in for the Leafs, and STFU “neutral” broadcast teams who are not with us.

  • FightingFourDozen

And now you see why, when the Leafs are in Boston, they don’t get the calls, Boston gets all the calls, because the Bruins media will rip into them if otherwise, but they don’t have worry about that in Toronto, because the Toronto media will be falling over themselves to make the Leafs out to be the villains in their own town.

  • FightingFourDozen

Moreover, Jack Edwards was right, that was a blown call, the Leafs didn’t have the puck, Johnsson is lying around on the ice, it’s up to him to get to the bench so the Leafs can put another man on, the Leafs got away with one their and Edwards was perfectly reasonable to call it totally ridiculous, on the power play in the playoffs, that’s a fair advantage the Bruins gained by Johnsson not getting off the ice, and they were robbed of it, if it was the Leafs, homer that I am, I would be saying the same thin Edwards said.

  • FightingFourDozen

And to say that was interference is nonsense, you might think it was accidentally on purpose, but that’s how it’s done, without a clear check to interfere, it’s incidental contact when Marchand fell down.

All this complaining about Marchand is weak, he’s Nova Scotia good ol’ boy who plays hockey they way it was meant to be played, the way it was played before the No Hit League came along, and even as a “worthless” Leafs homer, I still love the kid, I wish we had him on the Leafs.

  • FightingFourDozen

The inference being what? All “worthless” homers need to STFU, when Leafs Geeks brings up homers, patriotism, and Boston media vs. Canadian media?
It’s a comments section, the comments are all within the context of the OP, on topic and in response to “gross” “worthless” “homers” STFU.

As an unabashed Leafs homer who has no beef with Boston homers being so to, I’m simply commenting in response the commentary.

What would be the problem with that, exactly?

  • FightingFourDozen

Hmm, well, seems odd that commenting on the commentary at an ostensible sports journalism site would be unwelcome, particularly when the commentary is hot button “gross” “worthless” “homers” “STFU”, but if that’s the case, my mistake and my apologies, I’ll just move on.
