Kessel and Phaneuf NEED to be traded as part of the rebuild. Its not just a talent issue here; its leadership, culture, style of play etc… and if they start bringing new, young players into the room with guys like Kessel and Phaneuf they will continue to dictate the culture and attitude of the locker room and the young players. They are not guys I want around a group of young, impressionable, developing players. I don’t want something like this – – to happen to a player like Nylander.

Plus, by the time this rebuild is done they’ll be past their primes. No benefit in keeping them.

The idea is not to keep Kessel and Phaneuf because they can fit on the team. They have long contracts so you have time to get them to a level that reflects fair value or overpayment from a trade partner rather than selling low now.

With Kessel though, literally a few drafts (and selling of other pieces) can change the landscape of the team and he could actually stay long term depending on his commitment to the game and team – think Calgary, Columbus, or Tampa.

Glass half full/half empty, looking at both sides.

Unfortunately that door swings both ways, and if you hold on to them their trade value may drop instead of go up.

Kessel will be 28 at the start of next season, it he isn’t 23 years old anymore. This team will not turn it around and be a contender in the next 4 or 5 seasons. Keeping him with the idea of “a couple good drafts follow by some smart trades and ……” is the kind of mind set that leads to mistakes and short sighted moves. Plus, as I said, he is NOT the kind of player you want around leading a bunch of young players.
